The Collaborative Wellness Project invites you to this month's Collective Rest session for the Macaulay community. If you have any questions, please contact Program Manager Sara Louie at sara.louie@mhc.cuny.edu

This month’s Collective Rest session will provide you with definitions of safety vs. safeness and guide you through a creative reflection exercise that will reveal the elements that contribute to your felt-sense of safeness based on who you are right now. Empowered with this visual tool, you’ll be able to assess the risks you’re willing to take in terms of how and if you’d like to show up in relationship.

Then we'll lie down for a guided rest practice where you'll create a sanctuary of safeness that you can rest in and return to in times of need. Through guided visualization and subconscious prompting, you’ll design a safe space that connects you to pleasure, comfort, and joy – all of which contribute to your sense of safeness. No matter what you’re facing, there is an inner sanctum, accessible only to you, that you can take refuge in and be resourced by.

In times of crisis and change, the topic of safety is understandably on the hearts and minds of many people. To the best of our ability, we all want to feel safe and be safe for others. But figuring out how to do that can be tricky when life itself is inherently risky.

As the Buddha discovered: life IS suffering. We get attached to people, places, and things that we will inevitably lose. We cling onto labels that aren’t real and control that we don’t actually have. We discover that when we avoid pain, we lose pleasure; when we fail to grieve, we dilute the power of love; and when we fear death, we don’t know how to live well.

Furthermore, what lands as safety for one person may land as a threat to another. What helps one person relax may trigger another’s defenses. What is right for one person can be totally wrong for another. Turns out, there is no simple solution, quick fix, or easy answer when it comes to safety because it’s relative and fleeting. What feels safe is constantly changing and depends on each situation because everyone else, including Mother Earth, is constantly changing, too!

This is a trauma-informed space, which means that everything is optional. You’re encouraged to engage in any way that feels good for you. This includes joining with video and microphone off to conserve your energy.

WHO THIS IS FOR: Anyone who wants to take better care of their physical, mental, and emotional health through rest – fidgety skeptics, beginners, or experienced meditators alike!

HOW TO PREPARE:
  • Materials: Please bring a piece of paper or journal, pen, and headphones (optional but recommended for the guided rest practce)
  • Try to join us 5 mins early if you can so that you can begin unwinding from the day.
  • Log on with video and microphone off: There’s no pressure to be “on” or perform here. This time is just for you.
  • Prepare your Rest Nest: a cozy space in your home where you can comfortably lie down relatively undisturbed for the rest practice.
  • Change into loose-fitting, comfy clothes that allow your skin to breathe: sweatpants, socks, pajamas, etc.

ABOUT YOUR FACILITATOR: Cassandra Lam (she/her) is a Vietnamese-Chinese somatic healing facilitator guiding tired and trauma-impacted organizations, communities, and individuals to feel safe enough to slow down.
