Macaulay will host a visit to the Leslie-Lohman Museum to experience the exhibition “I’m a thousand different people—Every one is real.” The exhibition takes its title from a drawing by artist and queer icon Candy Darling (1944-1974). Like Darling’s title, the exhibit underscores the multidimensionality of queer and trans life and artistic practices that insist on defining art and life entirely on one’s own terms. Darling grew up in Forest Hills, New York and is known for starring in several of Andy Warhol’s films and serving as the musical muse to the Velvet Underground. The program, with its emphasis on Darling as well as Warhol’s films and Lou Reed’s lyrics for the Velvet Underground, will describe how artists in New York City took on issues of marginalization and visibility.

The two-hour program will be led by Dr. Karen Shelby, Associate Professor of Art History at Baruch College, and Stamatina Gregory, Head Curator/Director of Exhibitions and Collections for the museum, and will include:

A history of the founding of the museum and its site-specificity within the context of the AIDS pandemic
The collection and archival mission of the museum
A short summary of past exhibitions and how they fit within the framework of the mission
An introduction to Candy Darling within the history of New York City
A walk-through of the current exhibition “I’m a thousand different people – Every One is Real” to get participants engaged with the art and prep for a later discussion
Regather to discuss reactions to the exhibit
A lecture of the exhibitions that are mounted on the exterior of the museum, which concludes the program as it began – with an emphasis on community and site specificity as it relates, in the 21st century, to issues of visibility within the LGTBQIA+ community
Macaulay will provide 20 tickets to the museum that will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, but the visit and the lecture/discussion will be open to all CUNY students.
